Joseph Butler on the Supposed Deficiency in the Evidence of Revelation

It has been thought by some persons, that if the evidence of revelation appears doubtful, this itself turns into a positive argument against it: because it cannot be supposed that, if it were true, it would be left to subsist upon doubtful evidence. And the objection against revelation from its not being universal is often insisted upon as of great weight.

Now the weakness of these opinions may be shewn by observing the suppositions on which they are founded: which are really such as these; that it cannot be thought God would have bestowed any favour at all upon us, unless in the degree, which, we think, He might, and which, we imagine, would be most to our particular advantage; and also that it cannot be thought He would bestow a favour upon any, unless He bestowed the same upon all: suppositions, which we find contradicted, not by a few instances of God’s natural government of the world, but by the general analogy of Nature together.

—Joseph Butler, The Analogy of Religion (London: Macmillan and Co., 1900), Part II, chapter 6, p. 203.

Book Review: What Every Christian Needs To Know About The Qur’an by James White

Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world with a membership of over one billion worldwide and over five million in the United States. The growth of Islam within the United States is challenging the way many evangelicals witness to people. The growing complexity of relationships between the United States and the Arab world after the events of 9/11, and the growing tide of terrorism, warrant an exploration into what true Islam is. In his new book What Every Christian Needs To Know About The Qur’an, Dr. James White writes to help Christians “understand the Qur’an’s teachings as it impacts our interactions with Muslims and events throughout our world” (12).  He wants to “draw out the Qur’an’s teachings on the key issues that separate Muslims and Christians and that form the basis of our dialogues and differences” (12). Dr. White does this by looking at the history surrounding Muhammad, the Qur’an itself, Allah, the Trinity, and Jesus, the prophecies of Muhammad in the Bible, and the transmission and text of the Qur’an.

Terminology Tuesday: Just War Theory

Just War Theory: The ethical theory that Christians may legitimately fight in wars, but only when certain conditions are met. Those conditions include the following: the cause must be just; the war must be waged by a legitimate government; the means used must be moral; the war must be a last resort; and there must be a reasonable chance of achieving the goals of the war. The just war theory has been the dominant view about participating in war among Catholic, Lutheran and Reformed theologians.1

J.C. Ryle on Godly Living

“Do nothing that you would not like God to see. Say nothing you would not like God to hear. Write nothing you would not like God to read. Go no place where you would not like God to find you. Read no book of which you would not like God to say, 'Show it to Me.' Never spend your time in such a way that you would not like to have God say, 'What are you doing?'"

Book Review: Near-Death Experiences as Evidence for the Existence of God and Heaven by J. Steve Miller

Last year a relative encouraged me to read a book entitled Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. The book tells the account of 4 year old Colton’s experience after a medical crisis. Upon his resuscitation, little Colton was able to tell his family amazing things that they claimed he could not have known. For example, Colton claimed to have met a sister that was miscarried that he didn’t know about. After reading the book, I remember thinking that Colton’s alleged experience, while fascinating, wasn’t concrete enough for me to say, “Okay, I believe it.” I simply needed more evidence and background knowledge about Colton and his family. I had heard scholars such as Gary Habermas [1] and J.P. Moreland discuss near-death experiences and while I always found these accounts intriguing, I never imagined I would reach a concrete conclusion on how reliable they were. For me, near-death experiences [NDEs] were possible evidence for the existence of God and the afterlife, but how could one really know for sure? Therefore, I never imagined them finding a home in my personal apologetic.

Well, as often happens when one reads a solid work on a given topic, my pre-suppositions have been challenged by author J. Steve Miller (interview here) in his book Near-Death Experiencesas Evidence for the Existence of God and Heaven.

Terminology Tuesday: Thomism

Thomism: Philosophical views inspired by Thomas Aquinas, who synthesized Christian thought with Aristotelian philosophy. Thomism is strongest among Roman Catholic thinkers and is characterized by a confidence in natural theology, though it also includes a strong affirmation that some Christian truths can only be believed on the basis of faith in a special revelation. In general the Thomistic tradition believes that "grace presupposes nature and perfects it."1

Charles Leslie: How unreasonable to reject these facts

"Besides that the importance of the subject would oblige all men to inquire more narrowly into the one than the other. For what consequence is it to me, or to the world, whether there was such a man as Caesar; whether he beat, or was beaten at Pharsalia; whether Homer or Virgil wrote such books; and whether what is related in the Iliads or Aeneids be true or false? It is not two pence up or down to any man in the world. And therefore it is worth no man’s while to inquire into it, either to oppose or justify the truth of these relations.

"But our very souls and bodies, both this life and eternity, are concerned in the truth of what is related in the holy Scriptures; and therefore men would be more inquisitive to search into the truth of these, than of any other facts; to examine and sift them narrowly, and to find out the deceit, if any such can be found; for it concerns them nearly, and is of the last importance to them.

"How unreasonable then is it to reject these facts, so sifted, so examined, and so attested, as no other facts in the world ever were; and yet to think it the most highly unreasonable, even to madness, to deny other facts, which have not the thousandth part of their evidence, and are of no consequence to us, whether true or false!"

Charles Leslie, A Short and Easy Method with the Deists (New York: New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, 1830), pp. 23-24.

Book Review: God's Not Dead by Rice Broocks

“There is evidence for an intelligent Creator everywhere you look. To say there is no evidence for this Creator is like saying the thousands of paintings in an art museum couldn’t have been painted because there are no artists visible in the gallery.”

After making this statement in the preface of his book, God's Not Dead, Pastor/Apologist Rice Broocks proceeds to present the evidence in a clear, straightforward, readable fashion. He begins with a look at atheism, remarking on its irrationalism and its failure as a viable worldview. He then moves quickly into the issue of faith, quoting C.S Lewis’ statement that “faith is actually holding on to what your reason has led you to conclude despite your changing moods” (28). He outlines three key ingredients in faith – knowledge, assent and trust. He then explores the function and reliability of science, noting that science and religion are not at odds. The conflict, he says, lies between faith and naturalism.

Terminology Tuesday: Quest of the Historical Jesus

Quest of the Historical Jesus: The nineteenth-century movement that sought to separate and distinguish the man Jesus of Nazareth from the Christ of faith as proclaimed by the church. The proponents of this quest concluded that the "historical" (non-supernatural) Jesus never made any messianic claim, never predicted his death or resurrection and never instituted the sacraments now followed by the church. Instead the biblical stories that assign these acts to Jesus are nonhistorical "myths" that, together with certain philosophical and theological claims set forth in the NT documents, were projected onto him by his disciples, the Gospel writers and the early church. The true historical Jesus, in contrast, preached a simple, largely ethical message as capsulized in the dictum of the "fatherhood of God" and the "brotherhood of humankind."1

Why Telling Your Story is NOT the Best Way
to Share the Gospel

Anyone who’s ever taken a class on how to share their faith has heard some well-intentioned teacher say, “You don’t need to learn a lot of big words. Just tell them your story. Just tell them how Jesus changed your life. No one can argue with that.”

Then everyone sighs a big sigh of relief because they thought they’d have to spend time learning how to answer hard questions. Questions like “how do you know Jesus rose from the dead?” Or “how do you know the Bible’s inspired?”

I understand why this method of what we used to call “witnessing” is popular. Well-meaning pastors realize that people are scared to tell people about Jesus, and they want to find an easy method that they can use to teach their congregation how to share their faith without actually having to ask them to do anything—at least anything hard.

Review: Covenantal Apologetics by K. Scott Oliphint

With an increasingly hostile culture that preaches a message directly opposed to biblical Christianity, Christians need to be armed now more than ever with the knowledge of what they believe and how that knowledge impacts their lives. Many know a great deal about theology but yet don’t know how their theology should impact their life. Thus, the renewed focus on apologetics should be celebrated in the Church.

In Covenantal Apologetics: Principles and Practice in Defend of our Faith, Dr. K. Scott Oliphint argues that Biblical apologetics is Scripture driven, Christ-centered, Gospel-centric, and Holy Spirit empowered. His model of apologetics seeks to be rooted in solid biblical exegesis and application. “Covenantal Apologetics” is Oliphint’s revised term for Presuppositional Apologetics. It isn’t anything new but rather something founded upon the historic doctrines of the faith, something very biblical and glorifying to God. Those who have taken issue with Presuppositional Apologetics as a system should take note of the biblical and theological arguments Dr. Oliphint presents. Though his work is fresh in approach, it is firmly rooted in the long tradition of Reformed theology.

6 Enemies of Apologetic Engagement by Doug Groothuis

Philosopher and apologist Douglas Groothuis presents a great article on Six Enemies Of Apologetic Engagement from the Bethinking.org website. His purpose is briefly to lay out six factors that illegitimately inhibit apologetic engagement today. If these barriers are removed, our apologetic witness may grow into what it should be in Christ:
1. Indifference
2. Irrationalism
3. Ignorance
4. Cowardice
5. Arrogance and intellectual vanity
6. Superficial techniques or schlock apologetics

Be sure to read the article in its fullness.

Terminology Tuesday: Postmodernism

Postmodernism: A term used to designate a variety of intellectual and cultural developments in late-twentieth-century Western society. The postmodern ethos is characterized by a rejection of modernist values and a mistrust of the supposedly universal rational principles developed in the Enlightenment era. Postmoderns generally embrace pluralism and place value in the diversity of worldviews and religions that characterizes contemporary society..1

Sir Isaac Newton on the Supreme Being

“The most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being…This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of his dominion he is wont to be called Lord God παντοκρατωρ , or Universal Ruler…The Supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite, absolutely perfect; but a being, however perfect, without dominion, cannot be said to be Lord God; for we say, my God, your God, the God of Israel, the God of Gods, and Lord of Lords…”
