Richard Dawkins and the ‘Absence of Belief’

Richard Dawkins and the New Atheists have popularized the idea that atheism, contrary to other positions, is not a belief; it is simply ‘the absence of belief’ in God or a supreme being.  It almost sounds esoteric. Theists believe that God exists and atheists merely lack that belief. Well, on that view, my Chevy is just as much of an atheist as Richard Dawkins, for it, too, lacks the belief that God exists. And I don’t say that lightly; I love my Chevy.

Now, there is some truth to the idea that atheists ‘lack belief.’ They do. But that’s not enough. Like I said, what is it that separates an atheist from my Chevy? My Chevy lacks belief in God. Animals lack belief in God. Newborn babies lack belief in God. There are lots of things that lack belief in God and yet aren’t atheists. It takes more than ‘lack of belief’ to define an atheist.

William Lane Craig Critiques "The Unbelievers"

On the Reasonable Faith Podcast, William Lane Craig critiques the recent movie The Unbelievers, a documentary film featuring Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss. In three parts, Craig gives an overview of the goal of the documentary, talks about attitudes towards science, and shows the many unscientific assertions within the movie. Richard Dawkins Interviewed by Justin Brierley MP3 Audio

Atheist Richard Dawkins spoke to Premier’s Justin Brierley immediately after a debate he had with Christian Professor John Lennox on whether Science has disproved God.

The Oxford professor is most famous for his book The God Delusion. Surprisingly, Dawkins admits to Premier that there must have been some cause for the start of the universe.

BA: Hello, this is Brian Auten of Apologetics 315. Today I am speaking with Richard Morgan, a former atheist, who found salvation in Jesus Christ. His testimony is fascinating, as part of his conversion story came about through his interactions on the Richard Dawkins website discussion boards. I’m interested in hearing about Richard’s experience, how he came to know Christ, and also asking him his thoughts on apologetics.

Thank you so much for joining me today, Richard.

RM: It’s a pleasure - I think!

BA: Well, I’m glad you could join me today in the same time zone. Tell us where you’re from originally, Richard, and where you live now and basically what keeps you busy these days.

RM: Well, I was born and bred in a tiny village in North Wales, so in spite of the way I am speaking to you now, I am actually British. I grew up in North Wales. I went to college in Nottingham. I’ve lived and worked and taught in Nottingham and Manchester. And then circumstances in my life brought me to live in France, and in 1984 I moved to Toulouse, in the South West of France, which is where I have been living since. When I was in England, I was a music teacher, then when I came to France, I switched subjects and became an English teacher and I am just about on the point of retiring now, after having spent 25 pleasant years teaching English in the South West of France, well known for its vineyards.

Book Review: The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins

The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution by Richard Dawkins is the famous biologist’s most recent book since his best selling The God Delusion. This is a well-written book, complete with illustrations and beautiful color sections. In it, Professor Dawkins presents evidence for evolution. The purpose of this review is to survey some of Dawkins’ ideas and weigh up the overall logic of his case for evolution; in particular, does Dawkins present a good case that macroevolution is a fact?

3 Apologetics Books for Summer Reading

Here are three books to check out during your summer reading. These are chosen because they are quick and unique reads that are sure to be enlightening and helpful. The first is John Lennox's God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? As a mathematician and philosopher of science, Lennox brings a unique perspective to the so-called conflict between science and religion. He covers areas such as the scope and limits of science, the design of the universe, the origin of life, the genetic code, and the origin of information. This is highly recommended reading from a man who has had one, two, three debates with Richard Dawkins and two with Christopher Hitchens.

The next book to check out this summer is 5 Minute Apologist by Dr. Rick Cornish. This book is split into 100 bite-sized chapters that could be read in around 5 minutes each (hence the title). The idea here is obviously not to go deep into each subject, but to give a broad overview of the numerous areas that apologetics touches. The chapters run the gamut from the Bible and worldviews to the resurrection, science, miracles, and world religions. This is a handy little book that gives a lot of good answers and a good outline of the apologetics landscape.

The third book is Pastor David Robertson's notorious The Dawkins Letters: Challenging Atheist Myths. Again, a quick and easy read, but very good content that deals with the main themes of Dawkins' God Delusion. Based upon open letters to Dawkins which found their way into the spotlight, this is a good recommendation because of its easy-to-read style and lucid and commonsense approach.
