Interesting to note that Van Hale remains Mormon.
Truth will not always change a person's mind, e.g. the Pharisees, in our modern court cases and many others.
Van Hale remaining a Mormon does nothing to discredit Walter Martin's arguments.
My intention is not to discredit Walter Martin but simply point to the inability to change someones mind regardless of all the evidence.
Well sure, but then again sometimes the evidence helps.
Honestly though, I think apologetics is almost more of an internal ministry than an external one, even when it involves external efforts.
This was a really exciting debate. I thought Dr. Martin really handed it to Van Hale, though I thought the debate too often got off track into personal issues.
Davitor, surely you don't think that no one in the world has changed their mind. Maybe many people dig in their heels regardless of the good arguments given, but many don't. That's why there are converts.
@Davitor: No human power can change a person's heart, it is only God who can change someone's heart, "Turning a heart of stone into a heart of flesh."
"The heart is desperately wicked above all things. Who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9 Absolutely now amount of apologetics will save someone. Only the regenerating work of God can change a man's heart, as TSR says.
I guess that's why Paul argued in the synagogues everywhere he went, and before the people in Athens, and before kings and various other authorities, and why he told Timothy to be ready to give a defense. Because giving a defense is to no avail in leading a person to Christ.
Good point, Leslie.
Davitor and others:
Could it be that the information in apologetic work is what God uses to change peoples' hearts? Why or why not?
After all, it was through preaching - the heralding of unheard of information - that God uses to save those that believe. (1 Corinthians 1:21)
Would it be possible to get some more debates with Mormons posted? (The fact that the US almost wound up with a Mormon president should tell us something of their frightening intent.)
