Thank you for this. The Crusades (along with things like the Inquisition and the Salem Witch trials) are indeed a much-misunderstood subject, and are very often used as a subject to attack Christianity. Atheists point to the subject as 'proof' that 'religion' has supposedly caused more wars than anything else. Muslims have held a grudge against the West for hundreds of years because of the Crusades, and they use it (along with any wars that the U.S. may be involved with in the Middle East at the time) when they want to claim victim status (to point the finger of accusation away from themselves, which is a tactic that Muhammad himself used). Educating the general public, and especially Christians, about the actual facts concerning the Crusades, is much-needed.
