Sunday Quote: Ravi Zacharias on Jesus

"The character of Jesus has not only been the highest pattern of virtue, but the strongest incentive in its practice, and has exerted so deep an influence, that it may be truly said that the simple record of three years of active life has done more to regenerate and to soften mankind than all the disquisitions of philosophers and all the exhortations of moralists."

- Ravi Zacharias, Jesus Among Other Gods, p. 4

To be fair though, this quote is not original with Ravi. When he gives it, he's quoting a secular historian who says it.

Where does the on-going work of the promised Counsellor and Comforter fit in?

Is Christianity limited to the reading and expounding of words not in the possession of men and women in AD1 or do we instead move with Christ post-crucifixion and resurrection in the full power of the Spirit of Truth?

If one is to be truly apologetic about such a statement, one has to recognize that the majority of mankind is not Christian, so that the statement is misleading, especially since there is little evidence that mankind is softer because of Jesus' teachings. Ravi has said that all religions are exclusive. It is this very exclusion of other forms of thought that has hardened many Christians against others. For centuries it has been us vs. them, integration existing only so far as "the other" is useful for trade. It is the case of, if you are in the center of a hurricane, all you see is the tornado. Ravi probably surrounds himself with like-minded, softened Christians and puts blinders on.

I don't know what evidence you have to support that statement. Ravi travels extensively and is constantly engaging with those who are anything but like-minded.

Oceras, are you saying that Jesus hasn't had a great influence?
