DVD Series: Philosophy of Religion with William Lane Craig

The Philosophy of Religion Course by William Lane Craig is a 19 DVD, 30 hour survey course covering religious epistemology, natural theology, the coherence of theism, and Christian doctrine. It comes in a set of two DVD albums and includes a CD with course syllabus and handouts.

Content: This seminary course taught by William Lane Craig covers a great deal of material targeted to a more advanced level. Craig structures the lectures to deal first with faith: the presumption of atheism, religious belief with and without warrant. Then on to the existence of God with arguments from natural theology: cosmological, teleological, axiological, and ontological arguments are all presented in detail, complete with questions and answers from the students. The course continues on to explore the attributes of God and the concept of the trinity. Craig deals with the problem of evil, covers the doctrine of creation, and examines divine providence. The course concludes with a focus on Christ, the atonement, and Christian particularism.

Impressions: The teaching content of the DVDs is extremely stimulating and helpful. Craig is in his element and explores the subjects deeply, making use of diagrams and interacting with the students. The video quality is very good with multiple camera angles and good sound. The good production quality is to be commended. Apart from the curriculum Craig shares a series of four or five short instructional pieces of practical wisdom for the students; these little life-principles are a great added bonus.

Recommendation: This is high quality material and is worth watching more than once. Apologetics 315 would recommend this course for those who have grasped the content of Reasonable Faith and Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview and who want to delve deeper into the area of philosophy of religion.

This and other similar content can be found at the Biola Apologetics Store here.

Tactics in Defending the Faith: DVD Review

The Tactics in Defending the Faith DVD is an interactive group study course created by Stand to Reason. Presented by Greg Koukl, this is designed to be a "plug-and-play" tool for small group study. This short review will give a synopsis of the contents and assessment of its value as a teaching tool.

What’s in the box:
You get a DVD album which contains two DVDs and one data CD. Each DVD contains three 30-minute sessions. The data CD contains a PDF with table of contents, a 109-page student manual, student instructions, a 109-page teacher manual, and teacher instructions.

What’s on the DVDs:
The DVDs contain teaching sessions delivered by Greg Koukl in a church setting. In essence, you will be hearing Greg teaching on the main content of his Tactics for Defending the Faith (see also the book here). The title menu has links to each of the 3 sessions contained on each DVD. As Greg teaches, PowerPoint slides are shown onscreen as you watch. At key moments Greg will instruct the group to do various exercises or group activities outlined in the study guide, which the student will use as they watch. Here are the titles of each of the sessions:
  • Session 1: Learning the “Columbo” Tactic
  • Session 2: Refining the “Columbo” Tactic
  • Session 3: Perfecting the “Columbo” Tactic
  • Session 4: The “Suicide” Tactic
  • Session 5: The “Taking the Roof Off ” Tactic
  • Session 6: The “Steamroller” Tactic
The quality of the physical product:
The DVDs are provided in a standard quality album. The actual discs have been labeled with full-face color-printed labels. The six PowerPoint slides (1 for each session) are simple and attractive. (They are only needed if you don’t use the DVDs to do the teaching.) The really impressive part is the 109-page PDF study guides, suitable for printing and putting in a binder. This is very well produced, thorough, and will actually add a lot to the teaching. Excellent material.

The quality of the actual content:
For those familiar with Greg Koukl’s Tactics in the Defending the Faith, this is his excellent, tried and true content. There is nothing new here as far as the Tactics content goes – but it is presented in a way specifically designed for small groups to interact and master the material. The way STR put it together seems to accomplish that purpose very well.

Who will find this useful:
This is a great resource for those who run small groups, home groups, apologetics study groups, or Sunday school classes. The materials provided allow the DVDs to do the teaching part, while the group leader can facilitate the discussion. For a practical, accessible DVD resource that teaches Christians how to be good ambassadors this is a great choice.

Where to get it:
Get it from Stand to Reason here. Apologetics 315 readers can receive a 20% discount by entering the discount code 315TACTICS during checkout. This is a one-week offer. Enjoy!

A Review of the Amazon Kindle

The Kindle is an digital ebook reader made by Amazon. As of this writing, it boasts an offering of over 600,000 titles available in digital format through Amazon.com. The question is, Is it worth it? The purpose of this review is to offer my feedback on the device, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and share how I have found it useful.

What it does.
I won't go into too much detail about what it does - you can see the Kindle site for more detailed info. However, the Kindle is designed for the main purpose of being a lightweight and useful ebook reader. It does this very well, in my estimation. It allows you to adjust text size, page margins, make bookmarks, highlights, notes, and purchase books via free wireless network access. Other features include the ability to look at basic web pages (text-based is best), listen to Mp3s, view PDFs and documents, post highlights to Twitter and Facebook, and listen to the book via the text-to-speech feature. The battery life goes a long way, some 10 or more days if you are not using wireless.

Darwin's Dilemma: DVD Review

Darwin's Dilemma: The Mystery of the Cambrian Fossil Record is a documentary by Illustra Media exploring the Cambrian Explosion: the sudden appearance of major animal types in the fossil record. This review will provide an overview of the content.

As the Darwin's Dilemma website states:
Darwin’s Dilemma recreates the prehistoric world of the Cambrian era with state-of-the-art computer animation, and the film features interviews with numerous scientists, including leading evolutionary paleontologists Simon Conway Morris of Cambridge University and James Valentine of the University of California at Berkeley, marine biologist Paul Chien of the University of San Francisco, and evolutionary biologist Richard Sternberg, a Research Collaborator at the National Museum of Natural History.
The first quarter of the 72-minute DVD provides the historical background of the Burgess shale and describes the Cambrian Explosion as a mystery Darwin could not resolve. As Stephen Jay Gould put it: "Nothing distressed Darwin more than the Cambrian explosion." Paleobiologist Simon Conway Morris provides much of the narrative on the Cambrian, detailing the enormous diversification of fossils in the strata. This introduction provides an appropriate historical explanation of how this fossil layer was discovered and explored. Computer animations bring the fossilized animals to life, showing the full body plans and complexity of the most notable animals found in the Cambrian.

In the next fifteen minutes the documentary explores the development of Darwin's theory. This describes what Darwin expected to find in the fossil record, including step-by-step transitional forms. He was puzzled by not finding these transitions in the fossil record. However, he assumed the fossils were out there and that more time was needed to discover the transitional forms.

The documentary explains that according to contemporary estimates, some 90% of earth's history took place before Cambrian era. The Precambrian body plans were very simple, yet the Cambrian body-plans were much more complex. An analogy is provided: If 24 hours represents the history of the earth, at the 21st hour the major animal forms emerge in the span of 2 minutes, and are still will us today.

Half way through the documentary, further Cambrian fossils are discussed: the Chinese Chengjiang fossils, which were remarkably well preserved and many of them soft-bodied. Yet, they differed very little from the fossils found in other places in the world. In addition, small soft embryos were discovered in the Precambrian strata. If these can be preserved, why are other more complex forms found in the Precambrian strata? According to evolutionary biologist Rudolf Raff, "All of the known body plans seem to have appeared in the Cambrian radiation."

Three quarters through the documentary, young Darwin takes his voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle and the documentary describes Darwin's evolutionary model. It is described as simple to complex; gradual change over a long period of time. This view is described as "bottom-up," simple to complex.

The documentary makes the case that most of the major phyla first appear in the Cambrian strata. In the fossil record, the body plans don't gradually increase in complexity over time. The fossil record shows a sort of "top-down" model, with the phyla being established early and variations of those phyla following. This suddenness in the fossil record of the Cambrian is troublesome to Darwin. Yet, 150 years after Darwin, the same basic problem is still unsolved. Richard Dawkins is quoted: "Without gradualness… we are back to a miracle."

At the fifty-minute mark, the documentary begins to explore the structure of DNA. Just how much change in complexity is needed to create the diversity of body plans? Impressive computer animations show DNA while describing the mechanisms of mutation and natural selection. Next, Dawkins' idea of "climbing Mount Improbable" is illustrated: the idea of building a Cambrian animal one step at a time, one beneficial mutation at a time gradually over the course of a long period of time.

The documentary examines what sorts of mutations are needed to accomplish these transitions. And of probabilities? The probability of generating just one protein by mutation is about 1 in 10(74). This is compared to a blind man looking for one marked atom in our galaxy. In addition, the case is made that DNA mutations alone cannot make the necessary changes to the body plans themselves. To this point, the documentary has focused on showing the inadequacy of Darwin's theory to account for the fossil evidence or the DNA changes needed to produce the body plans found in the Cambrian strata.

At the one-hour point in the documentary, a case for intelligent design is more directly presented by looking at the information-rich qualities of the DNA instruction code for life. This case consists of a few main keys:
• Top-down pattern of appearance of the phyla
• Hierarchical arrangement of parts
• Absence of transitional fossils
• Information comes from intelligence
Each of these points is more fully developed in the last fifteen or so minutes of the documentary. It is not possible (nor the intention) of this review to lay out or defend the full case that is made in the DVD. Accordingly, the potential critic would be advised to view the DVD for himself.

In sum, the documentary is indeed a fascinating case for intelligent design. The production quality of the documentary is well on par with the first two DVDs in the Illustra Media series: The Privileged Planet and Unlocking the Mystery of Life, both of which are highly recommended. Get the DVD here. Learn more about the documentary here.

3 Apologetics Books for Summer Reading

Here are three books to check out during your summer reading. These are chosen because they are quick and unique reads that are sure to be enlightening and helpful. The first is John Lennox's God's Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? As a mathematician and philosopher of science, Lennox brings a unique perspective to the so-called conflict between science and religion. He covers areas such as the scope and limits of science, the design of the universe, the origin of life, the genetic code, and the origin of information. This is highly recommended reading from a man who has had one, two, three debates with Richard Dawkins and two with Christopher Hitchens.

The next book to check out this summer is 5 Minute Apologist by Dr. Rick Cornish. This book is split into 100 bite-sized chapters that could be read in around 5 minutes each (hence the title). The idea here is obviously not to go deep into each subject, but to give a broad overview of the numerous areas that apologetics touches. The chapters run the gamut from the Bible and worldviews to the resurrection, science, miracles, and world religions. This is a handy little book that gives a lot of good answers and a good outline of the apologetics landscape.

The third book is Pastor David Robertson's notorious The Dawkins Letters: Challenging Atheist Myths. Again, a quick and easy read, but very good content that deals with the main themes of Dawkins' God Delusion. Based upon open letters to Dawkins which found their way into the spotlight, this is a good recommendation because of its easy-to-read style and lucid and commonsense approach. You can check out a talk by David Robertson here. Read chapters online here.

Happy reading. Go ahead and offer your summer reading recommendations.

The Dawkins Confusion - by Alvin Plantinga

Alvin Plantinga, one of today's notable philosophers, reviews Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion:
Now despite the fact that this book is mainly philosophy, Dawkins is not a philosopher (he's a biologist). Even taking this into account, however, much of the philosophy he purveys is at best jejune. You might say that some of his forays into philosophy are at best sophomoric, but that would be unfair to sophomores; the fact is (grade inflation aside), many of his arguments would receive a failing grade in a sophomore philosophy class. This, combined with the arrogant, smarter-than-thou tone of the book, can be annoying. I shall put irritation aside, however and do my best to take Dawkins' main argument seriously.

Antony Flew Reviews The God Delusion

Famous atheist philosopher Athony Flew has presented robust arguments for atheism for the last 50 years. That is, until he accepted that there is a God.

Not long ago Flew wrote a review of Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion:

"this book show Dawkins himself to have become what he and his fellow secularists typically believe to be an impossibility: namely, a secularist bigot"
