2012 Year in Review: Apologetics 315

This year has flown by, and it's time to review what has happened on Apologetics 315 during 2012. Once again this year saw over one million page views and over half a million visits by over a quarter of a million people all over the globe. Thanks for being one of them!

This year I interviewed 44 guests for the Apologetics 315 Interviews podcast. (I listed them here.) I enjoy all the interviews, but some of my favorites this year included Ravi Zacharias, New Testament scholar Daniel B. Wallace, philosopher Richard Swinburne, Navy SEAL Chad Williams, theologian Michael Patton, and philosopher Robin Collins, to name a few.

This year we began a project to transcribe of the over 150 apologetics interviews. This is going well with the help of faithful volunteers and a bit of funding. These transcripts can be found here.

In 2012 we finished our first Read Along Project. It was a chapter by chapter study of Douglas Groothuis' Christian Apologetics textbook. It was a great success, and so we did another Read Along with Apologetics 315 project. This was for Sean McDowell & Jonathan Morrow's excellent book Is God Just a Human Invention? This was the second read-along project. 2013 promises another... stay tuned.

Every Sunday this year we featured an apologetics-oriented quote. It's always interesting to see the discussions that one quote can start!

The second day of every week continues to be Terminology Tuesday. This started out a couple years ago and was meant to be a short, ten-part series. But it became popular, and I believe this is a useful tool to help emphasize the importance of understanding and defining the terms that we use in apologetics.

People continue to leave comments about the Weekly Apologetics Bonus Links. Apparently, this is a favorite day of the week for many people, as Apologetics 315 features the week's best links to great posts and resources.

In case you didn't realize it, all the Bonus Links are all drip-fed through the Ap315 Twitter Feed throughout the week. It's a good thing to follow, because sometimes I feature free books available on Kindle.

If you don't prefer the chatter of Twitter, you can get daily updates on the Facebook Page. If you're not yet a follower on Facebook, please follow. This helps others find apologetics resources who might not be aware of Apologetics 315. I appreciate people spreading the word.

The YouTube Channel continues to gain followers. 15 videos were uploaded this year. There will be more next year, certainly. Some of the most-viewed videos include Tim McGrew's great series on the Gospels and their reliability.

Debates are a regular feature. This year Apologetics 315 featured the following 18 debates' audio and/or video:
William Lane Craig & Peter S. Williams vs Arif Ahmed & Andrew Copson
Michael Licona vs Shane Puckett
Craig Evans vs Bart Ehrman
Daniel B. Wallace vs Bart Ehrman
William Lane Craig & Michael Licona vs Sakkie Spangenberg & Hansie Wolmarans
Richard Dawkins vs Rowan Williams
William Lane Craig vs Peter Atkins
William Lane Craig vs Klemens Kappel
David Robertson vs Mike Lee
William Lane Craig vs Mike Begon
Lenny Esposito vs Richard Carrier
Douglas Jacoby vs Richard Carrier
William Lane Craig vs Andrew Pyle
William Lane Craig vs Paul Kurtz
Hugh Ross vs Lewis Wolpert
• Michael Licona & Dale Martin (dialogue 1 / dialogue 2)
William Lane Craig vs Kari Enqvist

Another 2012 project was the How to Get Apologetics in Your Church 2 podcast and e-book. This project had contributions from about 20 people who have had successful apologetics groups in their local churches or campuses. Get the ebook free here. Testimonials have come in from people who have begun their own apologetics study groups because of the insights they gained from this series.

The Former Atheist Project is underway, but has been delayed in its release. I am still seeking more contributors to this upcoming project. If you are interested in contributing, please let me know.

This year Apologetics 315 reviewed 47 apologetics books. I want to say a big thank you to my review team for their hard work in reading and reviewing so many great titles. Thanks goes out to J.W. Wartick, Jay L. Wyle, Mary Lou, Latter Day Inkling, Chad Gross, Dave Jenkins, Mark Eckel, Graham Veale, Luke Nix, Holly Ordway, David Rodriguez, Chris Putnam, Brenton Cook, Eugene A. Curry, G. Kyle Essary, Chad Gibbons, Bill McCall, David Field, and Mike A. Robinson.

The Most-Visited Pages of 2012 were:
  1. The Ultimate Apologetics MP3 Audio Page
  2. The 16 Best Apologetics Podcasts
  3. Recommended Apologetics Book Directory
  4. An Apologetics Reading Plan for Beginners
  5. A Basic Logic Primer
  6. 10 Pitfalls of the Foolish Apologist
  7. Top 10 Myths About the Resurrection
  8. Christian Apologetics Blog Directory
  9. Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology Podcast
  10. Former Atheist Richard Morgan Interview
Now that list included a lot of posts that have been around for a few years. So here is the list of Top Ten New Posts for 2012:
Of course, bloggers couldn't make it without the help of other bloggers. So here's a shout out to a couple of blogging friends that I was pleased to meet up with in Michigan during the summer: Chad Gross of Truthbomb Apologetics and Wintery Knight from Winteryknight.com. (I was also pleased to meet up with Dr. Timothy McGrew, hero and mentor to all apologists!) And a special thanks to the Christian Apologetics Alliance and Apologetics Bloggers Alliance, both a great source of interaction and encouragement. (By the way, I am planning on being in Michigan in July 2013, if anyone wants to meet up.)

This year Apologetics 315 has been pleased to promote the work of Tactical Faith, an organization that gets apologetics out there in a grass-roots kind of way. They call it Grassroots apologetics. If you want to support apologetics events, this is an organization to help.

I continue to head up Reasonable Faith Belfast, now in its third year. We had some great meetings during 2012, including a Skype talk by cold-case detective J. Warner Wallace, a talk by Atheism's New Clothes author David Glass, and a bunch of talks by me on a variety of topics.

I was interviewed a few times this year. One was on EIE Radio, and the other by Tim McGrew about the vision of Apologetics 315.

Apologetics 315 promoted numerous apologetics conferences in the US and in the UK. I was happy to be able to attend the Unbelievable? Conference in London and meet Ken Samples and Hugh Ross. I also contributed to the Online Apologetics Conference 2012 hosted by Athanatos Ministries.

This year Apologetics 315 received its 501(c)(3) tax-deductible status. This has been a tremendous help, and thank you to those who have donated or become supporters. Find out more about that here, as it's not too late to make end-of-year donations.

Please pray for 2013 to be another good year. God bless, and thanks for reading!

2011 Year in Review: Apologetics 315

This year has gone fast. With 2012 on the horizon, it's time to review what has happened on Apologetics315 during 2011. This year saw over one million page views and half a million visitors to the site. Thanks for being one of them.

One feature of the blog that continues to be a favorite feature is the Weekly Apologetics Bonus Links. Because there is so much going on in the world of Christian apologetics, these weekly links provide a sort of short-list of what's happening during the week: good blog posts, events, new books, and news items. Some bloggers work hard to get on this list on a weekly basis, so you should visit them.

The Bonus Links are fed in large part by Apologetics 315's Twitter feed, which is a great way to keep up to date with these sorts of items. The Facebook page has also grown to over 4,500 members, who enjoy a daily link to the apologetics resources. If you have not yet subscribed to these, please consider doing so. You won't get more than one post a day on Facebook.

My favorite feature that has continued to grow in 2011 is the Apologetics 315 Interviews. This is a weekly interview with a Christian apologist, theologian, scientist, historian, author or philosopher. This year we broke the 100-interview mark. (You can subscribe to that podcast here.)

This year I interviewed 52 guests. I was thrilled to interview Alvin Plantinga, a living legend, and enjoyed a number of favorite interviews. A few that I really enjoyed this year included Craig Evans, John Warwick Montgomery, Timothy McGrew, Peter Kreeft, Craig Blomberg, Alister McGrath and Lee Strobel. I also worked with Clay Jones to produce a three-part interview about the Crusades, found here.

It was a pleasure teaming up with the blogger WinteryKnight for him to interview me a bit about apologetics. In addition, Jeremiah J. Johnston did a Skype interview with me for the Christian Thinkers Society, which I enjoyed.

Another MP3 by me which you might want to check out is Person-Sensitive Apologetics. I wrote this short essay and then recorded it to audio. It's about how to be sensitive to your audience when doing apologetics. Check it out here.

Apologetics 315 launched a YouTube Channel this year. This is a video version of some of the Apologetics 315 Interviews. Check it out here.

Another project this year was the Read Along with Apologetics 315 project. This is a weekly, chapter-by-chapter study through Douglas Groothuis' excellent new book Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Christianity. This project has been going on for 15 weeks and will continue into 2012. By then anyone who wants to gain a good foundational grasp of the wide scope of Christian apologetics can use the custom-made study guide and work through the book at their own pace.

I was not able to review many books personally this year, due to finishing up a Masters of Arts in Christian Apologetics from Columbia Evangelical Seminary. (I interviewed CES's president, Rick Walston, right here.) It was a great program, which I recommend. In the meantime, I enlisted the help of a team of book reviewers to work on tackling a growing number of books that are sure to be helpful for Christian apologists. Apologetics 315 reviewed a book every week this year.

Apologetics 315 reviewed apologetics "products" as well. Of particular note was the Biola Distance Learning Certificate, reviewed in three parts. This was a great program to take part in, so please consider doing the program yourself. Find the review here. The Metamorphosis DVD by Illustra Media was also reviewed this year.

Debates are a regular feature at Apologetics 315. Here are some featured this year:
• Walter Martin vs. Madalyn Murray O'Hair
• Douglas Jacoby vs. Robert Brotherus Debate
• William Lane Craig vs. Peter Millican
• William Lane Craig vs. Michael Tooley
• William Lane Craig vs. Stephen Law
• Greg Koukl vs John Baker
• Scott Klusendorf vs. Nadine Strossen Debate
• William Lane Craig vs. Herb Silverman Debate
• Jay Smith & Shabir Ally
• William Lane Craig vs. AC Grayling
• Dinesh D'Souza vs Bart Ehrman
• Michael Licona vs Stephen Patterson
• William Lane Craig vs. Sam Harris
• William Lane Craig vs. Lawrence Krauss
• Jay Smith & Khalil Meek
• Joe Boot vs. Clare Rowson
• William Lane Craig vs. George Williamson

Now in its second year, Reasonable Faith Belfast continued to have sessions, which included some Skype guests. These included Paul Copan on the topic Is God a Moral Monster?, and Timothy McGrew on the Gospels and Acts as History. The latter talk was notable, as it was recorded, along with the powerpoint, and provided here.

Apologetics 315 also partnered with the International Society of Women in Apologetics to feature a series of essays from women in apologetics. Those essays can be found here.

This year Apologetics 315 teamed up with New Zealand blogger and Christian philosopher Matthew Flannagan to create a podcast series on logical fallacies entitled Fallacy Friday. You can subscribe to it here.

Athanotos Christian Ministries held its annual online apologetics conference. I was able to take part, teaching a four-part series Introducing Logic and Critical Thinking.

Per tradition, I did my yearly update of my list of the Top 16 Apologetics Podcasts. There were also various book giveaways this year. And there was also a great Kindle giveaway as well. Lots of cults resources were added and featured this year. There was an apologetics quote every Sunday. Terminology Tuesday continues to crank out the weekly posts, providing a quick and concise way to assimilate common theological and apologetic terms.

Apologetics 315 supported and attended two UK-based apologetics conferences sponsored by Premier Christian Radio's Unbelievable? Radio Program. The Unbelievable Conference and the BeThinking National Day Conference.

Much more has happened with Apologetics 315 besides regular daily posts. Apologetics 315 was also incorporated, awaiting 501c3 status. Lord willing, this will allow for further growth, better quality and quantity or resources, and reaching more people.

Please pray for 2012 to be another good year. God bless, and thanks for reading!

12 Favorite Blog Posts at Apologetics 315

If you are a relatively new reader of Apologetics 315, you might not know where to begin, with over 1,300 blog posts featuring  apologetics resources on a daily basis. If you already know what you are looking for, you can use search: use the sidebar on the left listing the various topics. Or just use the search bar at the top for more detailed results. If you want to find some of the more popular pages, see the top right "must-visit pages" list.

But what happens to great posts that don't fall into those categories? That's where this post comes in. Here are 12 favorite blog posts at Apologetics 315:

1. Apologetics Podcasts Worth Your Time - These are some of the more useful podcasts, beyond the top 16. All worth checking out if you are wanting more audio.

2. How to Get Apologetics in Your Church: Podcast and eBook - If I could only recommend one series, it would be this one. We need to get apologetics programs going in churches everywhere.

3. Masters of Arts in Christian Apologetics Programs - If you are serious about doing apologetics, check out this page. It might provide you with the next step in the journey. We need well-equipped defenders.

9. Uninformed, Misinformed, Illogical, Incomplete - A short but extremely helpful post that will keep you focused when critiquing arguments. Read it, bookmark it, and memorize it.

10. Dr. Phil Fernandes Comprehensive MP3 Audio Feeds - When I started out I listened to all of these. Good stuff, and all free. Great free resource for those surveying apologetics topics.

11. Resurrection Resources Galore - This might be a great place to get started if you are studying the resurrection. A large list of links to resurrection reading to get you started.

12. Tons of Apologetics Audio from The Things that Matter Most - Not sure what happened to this program, but it had some excellent interviews. All of them are loaded with good nuggets.

2010 Year in Review for Apologetics315

As I look back at 2010 it seems liked it was such a busy year for Apologetics 315. So this post will just take a quick look back at some of the notable posts and projects here at Apologetics 315.

First, the Apologist Interviews Podcast became a weekly feature of the blog. There have been about 50 interviews this year with some notable apologists. Check out this link for a partial listing and links to subscribe to the podcast.

There were two large essay projects that involved many other contributors. The Is Christianity True? Podcast & Essay Series was a series of 23 1000-word short essays by apologist bloggers as they presented concise reasons why they believe Christianity is true. Each weekday during April a different blogger presented his essay and interacted with comments. Designed to be an outreach tool and brief introductory tool to some basic apologetic arguments, this series generated good interaction and is still being commented on.

The second podcast and essay series was designed to answer the common question: "How Do I Get Apologetics in My Church?" This was also a very enjoyable time of interacting with a wide variety of lay-apologists as they shared how they started apologetics classes, ministries, and outreaches in their own church homes. A great resource! Find it here.

As for book reviews, it was a fun year. There were over 25, with an emphasis on books dealing with atheism. The Grand Design review was also featured in Areopagus Journal, as was On Guard by William Lane Craig and The Future of Atheism by McGrath & Dennett. Be sure to check out the full listing of book reviews here.

In addition to reviews, products have been reviewed, such as the Tactics in Defending the Faith DVD series, the Biola Distance Learning Certificate in Apologetics, and The Reason for God DVD / study, and William Lane Craig's Philosophy of Religion Course.

Another new regular feature of the blog has been the weekly apologetics bonus links. Every week a summary of notable links is provided from around the web, highlighting some of the best or most useful items for reading or review along the lines of apologetics. Those can be found here.

Notable debates featured this year included:
Lewis Wolport vs Russell Cowburn
Stephen Meyer vs. Peter Atkins
Matt Slick vs. Eddie Tabash
Jay Richards vs. Christopher Hitchens
Dinesh D'Souza vs. John Loftus
Hugh Ross vs. Jason Lisle
Craig Evans vs. Bart Ehrman
Sean McDowell vs. James Corbett
Michael Brown vs. Bart Ehrman
Michael Licona vs. Richard Carrier
William Lane Craig vs. Massimo Pigliucci
Peter S. Williams vs. Peter Cave
Walter Martin vs. Van Hale
Alister McGrath vs. Daniel Dennett
Matthew Flannagan vs. Raymond Bradley
William Lane Craig vs. Yusuf Ismail
Matt Slick vs. Dan Barker
Alan Schlemon vs. Ceclili Chadwick
Craig, Geivett & Wolpe vs. Dawkins, Shermer & Ridley

This year Ap315 also reached a milestone in the number of posts -- passing the 1000-mark. Also featured was a small series of posts called the Apologist's Toolkit, which covered things like tips for lifelong learning and living an apologetic life.

On a personal note, it was also a fulfilling year starting Reasonable Faith Belfast, earning a Competent Communicator Award with Toastmasters (and winning a prize in a speech competition), doing a few radio interviews, and teaching apologetics.

In sum, 2010 has been a really great year. I want to thank all of the great apologists who contribute so much to the defense of Christianity. Also, I want to thank all of the wonderful contributors to the essay series, my fellow apologetics bloggers (you know who your are!), and all the loyal readers and commenters. Thanks for your contribution!

May God bless you in 2011!

9 Ways to Get the Most Out of Apologetics 315

Although Apologetics 315 is a blog, it has accumulated a lot of resources. You need to know how to make the most of these resources. This post will explain 9 ways to use the site most effectively.

1. How to Search the Site
You may be looking for something in particular -- say, a debate with Bart Ehrman. There are a couple ways to do this.

First, you can use the search bar on the right column a little ways down the page. Just type in your search (i.e., "Bart Ehrman") and the search results will appear back up at the top of the page.

Second, you can look for labels. Labels are located on the far right column of the blog. You can search or scroll down and find the label and click it in order to see all relevant posts with that label.

2. How to Download Audio
There are a couple ways to listen to audio that you find posted on the site.

The first option is to just click the link to the audio: "Full MP3 Audio here." If you click that link, the audio will (on most computers) open the audio file in your browser and begin to play.

The second option is to download the file to your computer for listening or for putting on your MP3 player / iPod. The way to do this (with most computers) is simply to right-click the link and select "save as..." or "download linked file as..." from the menu. Your computer will ask you where you want to download the audio file. Once it has been downloaded, you can listen to it on your computer or load it onto your portable player.

3. How to Use Podcasts
A podcast is basically an automated method of downloading audio to your computer and/or portable audio player. This is probably best done by using the iTunes program (download here). Here are a couple ways you can get podcasts from Apologetics315 into iTunes (and eventually your iPod).

First, you can use the iTunes link. If an iTunes link is provided on this site, it means that clicking it will open your iTunes program on your computer and automatically take you to that particular podcast's page where you can subscribe to it. This is the easiest method, but is not always available.

Second, you can use the RSS feed. If you see a link that says "RSS feed," here's what you do:
1. Right-click the link for the podcast you want to subscribe to.
2. Click "copy link"
3. Go to iTunes and click on "advanced" in the menu
4. Click "subscribe to podcast"
5. Paste the copied link into the text box
6. Click "ok" and you will be subscribed to the podcast.

4. How to Use Google Reader
If you have a Google account, you can use Google Reader to subscribe to Apologetics 315. This makes it possible for you to receive automated updates each day of new content. Here's one way to subscribe to Ap315's feed:

1. Get Google Reader (if you don't already)
2. Click on the orange RSS icon (see pic) at the top of Apologetics 315.
3. This takes you to the feedburner page where you can subcribe via Google Reader.
OR - 4. You can right-click the icon, hit "copy link" and paste it into your Reader subscription field.

5. How Get All New Featured Audio in Your iTunes
Using a combination of the Apologetics315 RSS feed and iTunes, you can basically podcast the Apologetics315 featured audio. Just right-click the RSS icon and "copy link" - then follow the second step under "how to use podcasts" above. Any time Ap315 features an individual audio file, it will be automatically downloaded into your iTunes.

6. How to Use Twitter
Apologetics 315 not only uses Twitter to provide updates to all posts but also to supply an additional quantity of updated apologetics links, resources, MP3 files, and updates of the Audio Junkie Feed. Anything good (but not awesome enough for a daily post) will be fed to you through the Twitter feed. The occasional personal note (rare) might show up. Here's what to do:
1. Go to Twitter.
2. Sign up for an account if you don't have one.
3. Once you have an account, go to Ap315's Twitter page.
4. Click on "follow" and you will receive updates from Ap315 via twitter.
5. Look around a bit and figure the rest of it out for yourself.

7. How to Use Facebook
Why become a follower on Facebook? For a couple of reasons. First, by becoming a "fan" you show your support of the site and this helps others find the site and the good resources. Second, fans get updates of posts in the news feeds, which can be handy if you don't use Google Reader. Third, you can network and discuss with others who are interested in apologetics from around the world. Fourth, there are other updates that don't occur on the blog.

1. If you have a Facebook account, simply click on the sidebar graphic (to the right).
2. Once you are at the Apologetics315 Facebook page, click on "become a fan"
3. That's it.

8. How to Subscribe by Email
If you want daily updates of all blog posts sent directly to you by email, just follow these simple steps:
1. Enter your email address in the "subscribe" form on the right column
2. Click "subscribe"
3. Follow the instructions from there. Quick and easy.

9. How to Recommend Resources
If you have come across some great content that is perfect for this site, please share it. If it is appropriate and good enough quality, Apologetics 315 will consider sharing it through either a blog post, Twitter post, Facebook post, or audio feed. Here are the sorts of things you can email and recommend:
• great apologetics blog posts or web sites
• high quality audio links
• links to new apologetics books (we will also consider reviewing new books)
• podcasts that are helpful
• upcoming conferences, debates, or apologetics events
• breaking news that is relevant to apologetics

By finding and recommending good resources, you help get great apologetics content to others.

Thanks and enjoy.
