This is a January 2008 debate at Stanford University between Christopher Hitchens and Jay Richards on the topic: Atheism vs. Theism and The Scientific Evidence of Intelligent Design. Also moderated by Ben Stein, as this was a debate leading up to the Expelled movie release.  Thanks to Wintery Knight for providing video links here.

Full MP3 Audio here. (1hr 50min)

Enjoy.

More Hitchens debates here. More from Jay Richards here.

This debate is vintage Hitchens.
High on hate,light on logic.
Ridicule is the tactic of choice, not reason.

Hitchens offers endless examples of what outrages him morally, yet never offers any basis for that moral outrage given an atheistic view of reality.

Classic.

Classic Hitchens... it is why we love him :-)

So I agree with SteveC

To quote another wiseman:-

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them;

Well said, Lee.

When someone wants to debate a Christian on the existence of Santa Claus (or any other god they have chosen not to believe in aside from their own) they will invoke ridicule the same.

As do we, when some espouse beliefs in talking snakes. How does one debate that? As Jefferson said, ridicule is the only weapon against unintelligible propositions.

The previous comments assume all positions (including the ones granted here, i.e., belief in talking snakes) are respectable. That it simple not the case.

Yog,

I saw a donkey once that could speak, on the TV. Sounded just like Eddie Murphy.

Now, if men can produce what appears to be a speaking animal, I suspect that the Creator of the universe is no less skillful. Maybe more so.

If you feel justified in ridiculing one, you ought to ridicukle both; don't you think?

Ex N1hilo,

Okay, sorry to chime in after four years but I have to ask - seriously?

Speaking as a Christian, you bet I'd ridicule anyone who presents a donkey that makes a few word-like speech and calls it sound. In the same vein, I would happily ridicule anyone who tried to defend Creationism (Not intelligent design - that's not a thing, or more accurately, it's the same thing.). It simply did not happen and is not required to have faith in God.
